GLDD Coastal & Dredging Studies Laboratory
The Center for Dredging Studies was established in 1968 as a result of conferences held between educators, representatives of the marine and dredging industry, manufacturers, and officials at Texas A&M University. The center is located in the Department of Ocean Engineering, and is supported by gifts and research grants from the dredging industry and the government and continuing education courses. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company (GLDD) is the current sponsor of the CDL through a generous endowment to Texas A&M University.
In addition to research and industrial testing, the center’s activities include teaching university courses and providing annual seminars and short courses concerning advances in coastal and dredging engineering technology. The center sponsors the annual dredging engineering short course, which continues to be in high demand. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock is the current sponsor of the CDL through generous endowment to Texas A&M University.
Under the auspices of the GLDD-CDS Lab, the Ocean Engineering Department offers two short courses, dealing with (i) dredging engineering, and (ii) coastal engineering and nature-based solutions. The organizational structure for the GLDD-CDS Lab is as follows:
Dr Vijay Panchang – Director
Dr Jens Figlus – Associate Director for Coastal Studies, and Convenor of the Coastal Engineering Workshop
Prof. Laurrie Cordes – Associate Director for Dredging Studies, and Convenor of the Dredging Short Course
A Scientific Advisory Committee guides the GLDD-CDS Lab. It consists of:
- Mr Michael Beton, Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, Houston
- Mr Rob Thomas, Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston, Texas
- Dr Shelly Anghera, Moffat & Nichol, Carlsbad California
Dredging Engineering Short Course

The Dredging Engineering Short Course is held each year in January. The course includes a mixture of lectures, laboratories, and panel-based discussion led by Texas A&M faculty. The course is administered by the Coastal and Dredging Laboratory, located in the Department of Ocean Engineering and the College of Engineering’s Continuing Education Office at Texas A&M University.
Two textbooks and course notes on all lecture material are provided with the course registration fee. A certificate and continuing education unites (~3.0 ECUs) are earned by attending this short course.

Coastal Engineering & Nature-Based Solutions Short Course
The Coastal Engineering & Nature-Based Solutions (CE & NBS) short course is a 4-day continuing education course offered by the Department of Ocean Engineering, with organizational assistance from the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station. It includes a mixture of engaging lectures by experts, laboratory exercises, and field site visits by bus and boat.
